History of Veterans Cricket

Veterans cricket started in Melbourne in 2003 when a few Over 60 cricketers organised matches on
a casual basis. Interest in veterans cricket grew quickly and more teams appeared and a competition
started for Over 60 cricketers. This concept proved to be highly successful and in season 2023-24
there are around 30 Veterans clubs involved in competitions across Victoria.

Veterans Cricket Victoria (VCV) now administers the Victorian competition and helps with the
development of veterans’ cricket which is now established in every Australian state and New
Zealand. The national governing body Veterans Cricket Australia (VCA) oversees the game on a
national basis.

Initially the structure only catered for Over 60 cricketers but over the years the age groups have
expanded to include separate competitions for Over 50’s and Over 70’s players. National
Championships are held every year for all three age groups where all states and New Zealand
compete in a weeklong carnival.

The opportunity exists for the best players to represent Australia in international matches such as
the Grey Ashes for Over 60’s and Silver Ashes for Over 70’s against England. A Veterans World Cup is
played every year between the 12 nations where veterans cricket is played.

From humble beginnings, veterans cricket now provides wonderful opportunities for older cricketers
to continue playing the game they love in addition to the enormous physical and social benefits for
all involved.
